Why I added micellar water into my routine
Updated: Mar 14, 2019
So, as you may have noticed, micellar water is a huge trend right now for makeup remover, but I hadn’t been paying much attention. I had my routine down and wasn’t planning on messing with it.
But, when I went to spend a long weekend with my best friend, who is a young mom. Her new outlook includes paying close attention to what we put in and ON our bodies. She shared that she started using micellar water to remove her makeup after realizing that most makeup remover has a layer of oil on the top.
Once I returned home, I decided to give it a try. She had a point, and I’m always open to new beauty tips and products! And let me tell you, I was pleasantly surprised or should I say happy with the results! My makeup wipes right off with a cotton round with one swipe – no rubbing back and forth that causes wrinkles and skin stretching! And, it’s much better for you than the other stuff!
What is micellar water? Well thanks to the interwebs and Byrdie.com, I found an expert to break it down for us:
Per Beverly Hills Dermatologist Debra Luftman, MD, “Micellar water contains small particles called micelles. They work like a miniature sponge, mopping up dirt and makeup while hydrating your skin. Micelles have an oil-loving ‘tail’ that traps dirt, oil, and makeup and a water-loving ‘head’ that allows the micelles to dissolve impurities so they can easily be wiped away.”
It’s supposed to be gentle even on sensitive skin types, but you may still check with your dermatologist if you have skin sensitivities.
Here are some additional benefits I’ve found of using micellar water over other makeup removers:
Easily removes makeup. It doesn’t just smudge makeup around your face. It actually removes it in one clean swipe! I am a huge fan of anything that helps prevent pulling and wrinkling on my face!
You don’t have to wash it off! This means after a sess at the gym or spin studio, I can just wipe off all the icky stuff and be on my way. This is great for those of us with limited time, but don’t want to leave sweat on our faces. [Hint: Never leave the gym without washing your face!]
You can use it to wash your makeup brushes. I learned about this while researching this post. And I decided to get out of my bed and clean all of my brushes. Why not? I know that sounds crazy, but it’s such a pain usually and this stuff works so well on my face. Well, it worked really well! They came clean in about the same amount of time without shampoos or soaps!
Garnier SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water, All Skin Types – you can pick this up at your local drug store and it’s super affordable. I ran a search in Environmental Working Group (EWG) Skin Deep to ensure it was safe (remember we started this use safer products), and it came back as a 1, which means low hazard (I’m learning more about this and will report back).
